A meeting today in Lahore was attended by Punjab chief minister Maryam Nawaz, who approved a solarization project for the province’s agricultural tube wells.

In a meeting held on 26th July 2024, Maryam Nawaz made this decision after discussing relief for the Kisans and making many important announcements. A significant program to assist sustainable agriculture while lowering farmers’ energy costs, 7,000 tube wells will be converted to solar energy in the first phase, and 10,000 in the second.

eligibility Criteria For The Solarization Of Tube Wells?

Similarly to all other initiatives, this scheme also adheres to certain criteria to ensure that assistance from the government only reaches the right people. A person can qualify for this scheme if they meet the following criteria:

  • The scheme is only for poor farmers,
  • Farmers who own a minimum of 25 acres would be eligible to participate in the project.
  • Farmers should carry their CNIC cards.

What are the benefits of this project for farmers?

Solar energy can significantly reduce the cost of operating a tubewell for farmers to Rs50 per acre by reducing electricity costs to approximately Rs1,500 per acre and diesel to almost Rs3,000 per acre. For their tubewells, they will only be responsible for 33% of the solarization cost; the remaining 67% will be subsidized by the government.

Farmers get relief from electricity bills

As part of the project, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said electricity bills would be reduced, solar panels would be available to farmers, reducing crop production costs and helping the agriculture industry. Her responsibilities included developing a sustainable supply management system for necessities like tomatoes and onions, as well as a unique package for vegetable producers.
